China is incurring huge expenditure in transferring and consolidating the Chinese population in Tibet. Massive investment has been made to build a network of modern highways all over Tibet. China can also boast of having laid the highest railway track in the world that connects Lhasa with Beijing. In fact, China often complains that its civilizing mission in Tibet is costing the government and people of China large amounts in terms of subsidies to an under-developed region. According to official Chinese statistics, the level of annual subsidies to the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) in the late 1980s was around 1 billion yuan or $270 million. However, all the infrastructure that China has built in Tibet has not made the lives of the native Tibetans any better; it has only taken the exploitative apparatuses of the Chinese government deeper.

  5. Really, I would …
Really, I would like to offer my heartiest gratitude to British Film Institute for preserving the videos, which 100% indicates that Tibet is one of the free nations until Chinese fully invaded in 1959. Still our struggle for freedom is on and will continue until our last breath. Will hope to return one day to our motherland Tibet and the hope of 6 millions people will last until Tibet is free. Free Tibet…..

Tibet was never free in the 1930′s – it was oppressed by a bunch of theology warlords.

It’s much more free today. This film is crappy, there has never been an independent Tibet.

  10. @SeanShannohan Yes, …
@SeanShannohan Yes, Yes! I do know all of this. I have done much research on the Tibet. All I was saying is that I think it is sad that Tibet was such a peaceful land; where the modern world had not tinted the civilization. America and England did not interrupt Tibet’s system, but China did with savagery. I may be going into foreign affairs and will play a part in other countries roles, so sometimes scared what I say on the web but my voice will not be silenced; just like Tibet’s!!!
